Worth going just for the Double Diamond on tap at £9.80 a pint.

Re: Athletics back at the bowl
The only parking anywhere near the OS is Westfield, there's 5k spaces and they are for the shoppers as well, so not that many Snarestone.

Sarge, I've been to Crystal Palace (saw Steve Backley break the world record there) and the Alexander Stadium in the old days, much like football, totally different experience.

Little parking near the OS? Don't make me laugh, there is plenty more than the Alexander stadium. We had to park a 20 minute chartered bus ride away at the Fort. Those charter buses probably won't be running for a Diamond League night, so you're screwed.

Used to love going to the old Coca cola meetings at Crystal Palace back in the day. Place would be packed out - Coe / Ovett / Alan Wells - proper nights they were - stadium held 15k or so I think - and the atmosphere was great.

Went to one day of the athletics at the OS a couple of years ago. Couldnt have been further away from that in terms of fun / buzz and quality.

Yep, same as the stadium in Eugene Oregon for the recent World Championships, it's the way forward for sustainability and costs to save building new stadiums for every major sports event in this age of recession and global warming.

I guess the OS for all it's faults showed how it can be done and was a bit of a groundbreaker.

Brentford.

That makes sense as the temporary stands at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham was just scaffolding so there is no reason they can't expand in the same way for any future event that requires an increased capacity.

Re: Athletics back at the bowl
.....Also there's little parking near the OS & they upgraded the transport links for the Alexander Stadium for the Commonwealth Games, it's now one of the best connected areas in Birmingham.

Re: Athletics back at the bowl
Snarestone 18k would be enough for a Diamond League meet, but I heard they can reconfigure it back to what it was for the Commonwealth Games if needed.

Re: Athletics back at the bowl
Although the commonwealth games was hugely popular, Athletics is struggling a little to get people involved and attending generally.

I can't help but feel that the £6m conversation costs could be invested much more wisely, like redevelopment of the Crystal Palace Stadium for instance. Or funding for the grass roots and youth athletics and running events which can struggle to find adequate officials and volunteers etc.

Given all the footballing "tweaks" since the last athletics meeting, can the stadium actually be reconfigured any more?

SnarestoneIron 5:01 Tue Aug 9
Re: Athletics back at the bowl
Not if we want the Worlds or Euros, I wouldn't have thought. Commonwealth Games was pretty much sold out for the athletics.

Isn't that big enough for athletics though?

Re: Athletics back at the bowl
It only really makes sense to hold Worlds or maybe a future Commonwealth athletics event at the OS now. There likely won't be another Olympics there now the park is all sold and developed, and the stadium will be too run down by the time it comes round again. Those events will actually be big enough to sell it out and make money. Anything else likely won't. They'll at least get a week's use out of it too, unlike one night for the Diamond league.

Gigs are the way to go in terms of VFM and profit vs conversion costs. Book the weekends out over summer which shouldn't be too difficult and you'll be laughing.

2 of the Alexander Stadium stands (the 2 ends) are temporary. Makes no sense, but that's what they did. Only holds 18,000 in it's permanent config.

Very limited parking nearby, zero during the Commonwealth Games, it needs some work to improve it to the standard you'd expect

Birmingham can fucking have it, we've gone massively off the boil as a nation in track and field.

Diamond league is fucking soulless, bit like the athletics equivalent of Champions league football.

Re: Athletics back at the bowl
It surely makes better financial sense just to put as many gigs on there over the summer as possible and forget about athletics. You can get away with far less reconfiguration to put those events on.

Re: Athletics back at the bowl
"Fans are being urged to secure their tickets early" - don't worry fans, there will be plenty of empty seats in a stadium far too big for a Diamond League meeting.

13 Brentford Rd 1:21 Tue Aug 9
Re: Athletics back at the bowl
It costs 7m to reconfigure for Athletics and then back to football mode thanks to Coe.
Athletics will never even cover the cost of one event over years. Who pays? The taxpayer at a time when the country is going into a recession requiring billions to counter it.
They've just rebuilt The Alexander Stadium for the Commonwealth Games at the taxpayers expense, so they need to grow up, get real and use that for Athletics.
Idiots!
